Our Mission

To help Small Town leaders move beyond outdated playbooks and build a new future grounded in local ownership and entrepreneurship.

Our Approach

Small Towns don’t collapse all at once: they drift.  Our work begins by helping leaders see their town clearly—how past decisions shaped today’s reality, and where real leverage still exists. From that framework, we help shape a town’s core by refocusing on local ownership, making small incremental bets, and building momentum that compounds over time.

HOW we do this

Small Town Advisory Services

We focus on Small Towns across America with populations of less than 20,000 people, because their challenges are unique. Big City tools are almost always a mismatch, and implementing them produces terrible results.

Our tools have ready application in cities, counties, and rural redevelopment programs across the country.

Speaking and Coaching

From Keynote Presentations to Two Day Intensives, our faculty share skill development insights that our clients can apply tomorrow.

This immediately applicable approach is what differentiates our program from everyone else.

Townwrights Institute

Our patented 12-Module course supports our Advisory Services work, equipping the Civic Stewards of tomorrow with handcrafted Small Town tools.

Our graduates organize and implement an applied project using their own Small Town as their target.

Frequently Asked Questions

A wright is someone responsible for craft, fit, and durability--not for speed or scale. A Townwright applies that same skill set to Small Towns as living systems with histories, constraints, and untapped potential. That unique focus allows them to rebuild from a stewardship focus, creating rapid value focused on long-term outcomes, not quick fixes.

It can be, it's just not in the conventional sense. We don’t arrive with a binder of recommendations or a prepackaged solution. Instead, we work alongside our Small Town leaders to clarify priorities, identify leverage points, and build local capacity. The goal is not dependency on us, it's confidence, repeatability, and continuity.

We find our typical client is an EDO Officer or their board, and in many cases they are the elected officials in city and county governance (or their senior staff). Our tools have been purpose built for smaller communities wrestling with population decline and increasingly tight budgets.

Growth can be a by-product, but it is rarely the solution to any ongoing problem. Our focus is on your town's stabilization, repair, and helping teach new disciplines that will help local stewards grow local capacity. We help Small Town leaders define success on their terms, then help them forge the tools to succeed over generations.

Success in any of our engagements looks like clearer priorities, fewer reactive decisions, stronger local business ownership, and steady momentum that's built quarter by quarter. We do help towns create jobs and grow their tax base, but we focus first on restoring local confidence: lasting investment always starts at home.

Our Substack presence is growing rapidly as Small Town leaders around the country learn about what we do. It is the home of our long-form content that shapes new thinking about Small Town work. But more importantly, it's the home of Townwrights Institute, our patented applied training program. It's also the repository of our tools, diagnostics, field tests, and deliverables you could put into place by next Tuesday.

Some clients come to us through our Keynote Presentations or from our workshops, while others come through our open content in our Townwrights Institute training program. All of our engagements begin with a conversation to gain clarity, and a set of diagnostics we can use to help shape our next steps together.
